Illegal Diamond trade:
Not all the diamonds that adorn a diamond engagement ring come from legitimate sources. engagement rings use diamonds from variety of different sources. Some of the diamonds come from illegal mines of countries like Liberia, Sierra Leone, Angola, Ivory Coast etc. The people in these countries are forced to look for diamonds. They are threatened with death if they refuse to work and those who disobey meet a gruesome fate.
However, The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), negotiated by 61 governments, civil societies launched in 2003 aims to implement certification on the import and export of diamonds. This is done to reduce the amount of conflict diamonds or blood diamonds to be exported or imported illegally. However, it also requires individual’s awareness to confirm avoidance of conflict diamonds before buying diamond engagement rings or diamond jewelry.
